{"id":15037,"date":"2020-03-25T14:50:31","date_gmt":"2020-03-25T14:50:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.felana.com.mx\/eng\/mexico-prepares-to-launch-first-cabotage-routes-more-than-shipping\/"},"modified":"2020-03-25T14:50:31","modified_gmt":"2020-03-25T14:50:31","slug":"mexico-prepares-to-launch-first-cabotage-routes-more-than-shipping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.felana.com.mx\/eng\/mexico-prepares-to-launch-first-cabotage-routes-more-than-shipping\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexico Prepares to Launch First Cabotage Routes &#8211; More Than Shipping"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Beginning in the first quarter of 2020, Mexico will officially launch its first container cabotage program, starting with a single coastal transportation route in the Gulf of Mexico between Veracruz and Progreso.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>By July 2020, two additional routes will be established: One making several port stops between Tampico and Puerto Santo Tom\u00e1s de Castilla, Guatemala, and one linking the Port of L\u00e1zaro C\u00e1rdenas and the Port of Caldera, Costa Rica, with stops at the Port of Chiapas in Mexico and the Port of Quetzal in Guatemala.<\/p>\n<p>According to H\u00e9ctor L\u00f3pez Guti\u00e9rrez, Mexico\u2019s general coordinator for ports and merchant marine, the three new shipping routes are the first steps in a planned $10.4 billion expansion of Mexico\u2019s shipping industry over the next six years. Guti\u00e9rrez made an official announcement regarding the program at the Latin American Congress of Ports in Miami last month.<\/p>\n<p>Additional short-term plans for the new cabotage program include an injection of $28 million to upgrade ports and prepare vessels for shipping, along with a new container terminal and auto handling facility at Progreso.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Multiple Positive Effects<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Authorities hope the new cabotage program will impact the Mexican economy positively on multiple fronts, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stimulating economic growth within multiple industries along the coasts, including the electronics and automotive sectors which will have new avenues for shipping.<\/li>\n<li>Giving an economic boost to the country\u2019s sluggish port system, creating more jobs while attracting new business from overseas.<\/li>\n<li>Easing the strain on the nation\u2019s crowded highway infrastructure while reducing transportation costs and the incidents of cargo theft on the highways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, authorities believe that moving a significant percentage of cargo shipping into the waterways will have a long-term benefit in improved air quality thanks to reduced fuel consumption along the nation\u2019s highways.<\/p>\n<p>The cabotage initiative is a key component in the administrative agenda of Mexican President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador, who took office in December 2018.
